September in Marathon, Florida: A Quieter Way to Experience the Florida Keys

9/4/2026

PictureSeptember in Marathon Florida
There is something different about the Florida Keys after the heart of summer begins to wind down.
September in Marathon brings a slower pace, warm tropical water, plenty of time outdoors and a chance to experience the Middle Keys with a little more breathing room. For travelers who come to the Keys to boat, fish, explore the water and spend time together rather than simply check attractions off a list, it can be an especially enjoyable time to visit.
At Water View Vacations, we have always believed Marathon is best experienced from the water. September gives visitors plenty of reasons to do exactly that.
Spend More of Your Vacation on the WaterMarathon sits in the heart of the Florida Keys, with easy access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay.
That location is one of the reasons the area works so well for boating families. A morning might start with fishing or a ride offshore, followed by lunch back at the house, an afternoon in the pool and another trip out on the boat before sunset.
For guests bringing their own boat, staying at a waterfront vacation home can completely change the rhythm of the trip. Instead of repeatedly loading gear into the car, launching the boat and hauling everything back at the end of the day, the boat becomes part of the vacation.
At Salty Anglers, our Marathon waterfront home, guests can enjoy the convenience of having the water directly behind the property, making spontaneous boating and fishing days much easier.
Fishing Is Part of the Marathon ExperienceYou don't have to be a tournament angler to appreciate how deeply fishing is woven into life in Marathon.
Depending on conditions and the type of fishing you enjoy, a day on the water might mean exploring nearby reefs, fishing offshore, trying the bridges and channels, or heading toward the backcountry.
Even travelers who are new to fishing can book one of the area's experienced local captains and let someone else handle the boat, tackle and local knowledge.
One of our favorite things about Marathon is that fishing doesn't necessarily have to consume the entire day. You can fish early, return home for lunch and still have an afternoon left for the pool, beach or another adventure.
Explore Marathon Beyond the BoatSeptember also brings several local activities and events to the Middle Keys.
The Grassy Key Paddle Battle, scheduled for September 17–21, 2026, brings several days of water-focused activities to the Marathon area. Later in the month, the Dolphin Research Center is scheduled to host its Dolphin Sunset Celebration on September 30. Event schedules can change, so visitors should always confirm dates and availability directly before making plans.
But some of Marathon's best experiences don't require an event calendar at all.
Spend a morning at Sombrero Beach, drive across the Seven Mile Bridge, visit the Turtle Hospital, explore Bahia Honda State Park or simply find a waterfront restaurant and watch the boats go by.
One advantage of staying in Marathon is that you can create a full itinerary—or barely have an itinerary at all.
Make Time for the Seven Mile BridgeNo trip to Marathon feels complete without spending some time around the Seven Mile Bridge.
It is one of the defining landmarks of the Middle Keys, connecting Marathon with the Lower Keys and surrounding visitors with some of the scenery that makes this part of Florida so distinctive.
Drive across it on your way toward Bahia Honda and the Lower Keys, or make it part of a relaxed sightseeing day.
For many visitors, some of the best memories of a Keys vacation come from these unplanned drives, stops and sunsets rather than scheduled attractions.
September Travel in the Keys Requires FlexibilitySeptember falls within Atlantic hurricane season, so flexibility is important when planning a Florida Keys trip.
Keep an eye on the weather forecast as your stay approaches and review cancellation, travel insurance and boating plans accordingly.
The upside is that travelers willing to visit outside the busiest periods can experience a different side of Marathon—one that feels more relaxed and less hurried.
Stay Waterfront in MarathonIf your idea of a Florida Keys vacation includes fishing rods, bathing suits, boats, family dinners and evenings outside by the water, Marathon is difficult to beat.
Salty Anglers, part of the Water View Vacations collection, is a waterfront vacation home designed especially well for families and boating guests.
Instead of planning every hour of the trip, you can wake up, look outside and decide what kind of Keys day you want to have.
And sometimes that is exactly what a vacation should be.
